“I have to tell you how much I love the Furminator. I have a cat that I got from a shelter. She is very loving but apparently had been an outdoor cat and was never properly cared for or groom , so whenever I would groom her, I would have to hold her down, bribe her with treats, wrap her in a towel, or whatever I could come up with to get her to stay still while I tried to groom her. And even when I did groom her, she still shed like crazy and I just didn’t feel like any of the products I was using really did a good job. Here are a few tips that might make a cat’s first harness encounter a little better:
- While you are inside, put the harness on your cat and adjust it. Be sure you are able to slide one finger between the harness and your cat.
- Right away, place a bowl of your cat’s favorite food or treat in front of him.
- After he has finished his dish, give him a few minutes and then remove the harness.
- Do the same thing the next day, except leave the harness on a little longer and add the lead.
- Continue doing step 4 until your cat is comfortable wearing the harness.
- Then take him outside to a quiet location.
- Don’t expect your cat to walk by your side. After all, he’s a cat! Let him take you for a walk.
- After you bring your cat back inside, remove the harness.
Pretty soon your cat will look forward to his outings.

How the FURminator deShedding Tool Was Invented
At the heart of the FURminator Professional deShedding™ Product line is the revolutionary FURminator deShedding Tool. The story of how it was developed offers important insight to how and why the FURminator deShedding Tool works better than any brush, comb or rake.
For years, a struggling groomer had been attempting to find the best tool to combat the number one complaint of her customers . . . shedding. After more than a decade of using every possible device in the industry, she worked with her husband and eventually created a unique edge that didn’t cut the pet’s coat, but grabs and removes the loose hair from the undercoat.
Together they experimented with placing the stainless steel deShedding edge in a crude handle. Little by little they experimented with different, more-ergonomic handle designs and more-effective edges. After many modifications they arrived at their most successful design and had it patented.
One thing they discovered in the process was that the grooming tool not only removed hair from loose undercoat, it also brought their pet’s own natural oils up from the bottom coat to the top coat, leaving the pet with a more lustrous, naturally shiny coat.

- What size deShedding tool do I need for my pet?
- The smaller tool is more versatile while the larger tools are more efficient. All of the tools have the same tooth design on the stainless steel deShedding edge, with the only difference being the width of the edge itself. Most cat and small dog owners choose the small tool for their pet. owners of large shedding beasts, wanting to remove the most undercoat and loose hair per stroke, will choose either the medium or large yellow tool.
- On which dog breeds should the FURminator deShedding Tool be used?
- The tool will work on all shedding dogs. A few breeds that are typically not good candidates for the FURminator Treatment are Poodles, Shitzus, Maltese, Bichons, Portuguese Water Dogs, and Irish Water Spaniels.
- How often should I use the FURminator deShedding Tool?
- Undercoat grows back after about 4-6 weeks. All pets are different, but on an average size dog, if you use the tool for about 10-15 minutes once a week, you can reduce shedding up to 90%.
- Does the FURminator deShedding Tool cut the hair?
- No, the deShedding Tool does not cut hair; it gently pulls out the fluffy undercoat, leaving the topcoat shiny and undamaged. Most pets enjoy the use of the deShedding tool on them much better than brushes and combs that can scratch the skin and cause pain.
- Does the deShedding Tool prevent hairballs in my cat?
- Yes. In fact, in the April 2005 issue of Tufts University School of Veterinary medicine’s newsletter for cat owners, the FURminator deShedding Tool was ranked among the best for getting rid of excess hair that causes hairballs.
- Do I ever need to sharpen or replace the tool deShedding edge?
- Neither sharpening or replacement should be required under normal use. In fact, the small blue tool edge is injection molded into the tool handle and is non-removable. The medium and large tools do offer the option to replace the edge if damaged, but this should not be necessary under normal use.
- Can the FURminator deShedding Tool be used in the winter or colder months?
- A: Since the FURminator deShedding Tool only removes the coat that has already shed from your dog, the tool is fine to use in the winter. You will most likely not have to use the tool as often as you would during heavy shedding months.
- Can the FURminator deShedding Tool be used to remove mats or tangles?
- A: The FURminator Tool is not to be used to remove mats or tangles. The pet’s coat should be completely free of any mats or tangles before using the tool. We always recommend reading the tool instructions before each use.
