Here are a few tips that might make a cat’s first harness encounter a little better:

1. While you are inside, put the harness on your cat and adjust it. Be sure you are able to slide one finger between the harness and your cat.
2. Right away, place a bowl of your cat’s favorite food or treat in front of him.
3. After he has finished his dish, give him a few minutes and then remove the harness.
4. Do the same thing the next day, except leave the harness on a little longer and add the lead.
5. Continue doing step 4 until your cat is comfortable wearing the harness.
6. Then take him outside to a quiet location.
7. Don’t expect your cat to walk by your side. After all, he’s a cat! Let him take you for a walk.
8. After you bring your cat back inside, remove the harness.

Pretty soon your cat will look forward to his outings.
