Proper Brushing Tips and Techniques

Proper Brushing Tips and Techniques

For all pet owners (with the exclusion of short haired cats), regular brushing is necessary to avoid excessive shedding and matting.  Short haired cats can clean themselves for the most part, and won’t shed all that often, in addition, a lot of cats dislike being brushed, so it’s best to avoid brushing if possible.  Unfortunately, long haired cats do require brushing.  When brushing a cat, it’s important to start when they’re a kitten if possible, if not, make sure to use a soft shedding brush in combination with smooth strokes.  If you encounter a mat, brush it until the hair becomes looser, and then cut it out with scissors, being mindful of the skin tissue.  Brushing dogs is often a little bit easier than brushing cats because they tend to be more tolerant.  When brushing a dog, it’s best to use a dog shedding brush in combination with a rake.  Use the rake to untangle coarse hair and mats, and the brush to follow up afterwards.  With long haired dogs, be prepared to get several bags of hair during shedding season, and also be prepare to brush for at least half an hour if you do it every 2-3 weeks.

There are a lot of different dog and cat brushes available, and most serve the same purpose.  Don’t spend too much on a brush at first; experiment with different brushes and discover what your pet likes.

Preventing Pet Shedding

Author: PlatinumPetLover

furminator-pet-shedding-toolIn order to prevent pet hair from getting on your clothes, furniture, carpet, and all the other places it tends to show up, regular brushing of your pet is essential.  There are several tools ranging from standard brushes to electric clippers.  The bristle brush is a great way to remove hair from short haired pets, but won’t work quite as well for long hair.  For long haired animals you will want to use a rake or even clippers in cases where matting has occurred.

There are also products like the furminator which specifically targets shedding animals, and is great in the spring for when dogs and cats are shedding their winter coats.

Testimonials for the FURminatory Dog Shedding Brush

“I Wanted to thank you and if Angel (my 13 year old Himalayan cat) could talk she would thank you too. She had such trouble with hairballs. I bought different foods, gave her hairball ointment several times a week and even took her to the vet. I thought I was thoroughly grooming her since she got a good brushing every day. When I got the Furminator I was shocked to see the amount of loose undercoat she had and she probably swallowed a good deal of it every time she cleaned herself. Now, she’s a lot smaller looking than she used to be. Her coat is silky and lustrous and she rarely has a hairball. Thank you SO much!”
Patricia

“I just bought a Furminator and I absolutely LOVE it!!! It works far better than any other product I have used to try and control my dogs shedding.”
JoAnne

“I have to tell you how much I love the Furminator. I have a cat that I got from a shelter. She is very loving but apparently had been an outdoor cat and was never properly cared for or groom , so whenever I would groom her, I would have to hold her down, bribe her with treats, wrap her in a towel, or whatever I could come up with to get her to stay still while I tried to groom her. And even when I did groom her, she still shed like crazy and I just didn’t feel like any of the products I was using really did a good job. After going through a variety of brushes, grooming gloves, combs, etc, I finally ordered your product. To start with it works wonderful. After she is groomed her hair feels like silk, and stays that way for a couple weeks until it’s time to groom again, but the BEST part is that I have always had a routine for her grooming which meant I would grab a purple towel which I only used for my cat, and I would put it across my lap so the hair wouldn’t get on my clothing. My cat used to hide as soon as she saw the purple towel come out of the closet. Well, it has been about 6 months now that I have been using the Furminator, and to my great surprise, she has grown to enjoy her grooming so much now, that when I grab the purple towel and the Furminator, she jumps onto my lap, lays out on the towel and purrs to her heart’s content while I groom her. I have given the Furminator as a gift to my sister, who has a Pug, and she loves it, and also to a friend who has two cats who used to leave so much hair around that I hated sitting on her sofa, and now she uses it regularly and loves it. So thank you for making such a wonderful product, and I would recommend it to anyone in a minute. ”
Candace

“Dear Furminator folks - I purchased your product last night, and it is awesome! It truly lives up to its hype. Thanks again for a terrific, and much needed, product.”
Chris

“Just a note to say thanks so much for coming up with a product that actually works!! We recommend it to anyone and everyone with a dog! We tell people it has changed our lives and we can actually enjoy our dog and not resent her and all of that hair!! Thanks, ”
Danica

“First of all, I want to say “thank you” for the furminator! We purchased one today, tried it on our Golden Retriever and it works exactly as “you” have advertised.”
Lori

“I just want to say what a great tool the FURminator is! Our dogs were at a kennel on “vacation” and got baths before we picked them up. The groomer there showed us the FURminator. I went home and researched it, and purchased one at our local Pet Smart store. I came home and used it, and could not believe the amount of hair we got off our Golden Retriever puppy who is 9 months old! I don’t have to vacuum every day any more! It was amazing! I have my friends and family purchasing one!! They tried it and loved it, too. Thanks to whoever came up with this fantastic tool!!”
Sue

“I purchased a small size Furminator about a week ago, and have only used it twice, but my cat has already fallen in love with it. She keeps going to the area where I do the furminating, and sits there meowing at me every time I walk by!”
Ronn

“That thing is AMAZING! It’s one thing to see it on the internet, but a completely other thing to do it yourself in real life. Also, why is it my that cat likes it better than the regular brush? She just loves it, she actually laid down for a bit when I use it on her — then she did her usual, ‘I want to eat it’ thing. She is my little love! She is mostly Maine Coon and has PLENTY of extra fur — especially now that it’s summer in Texas. She is adopted and her name is Fuzzball — and that name really suits her. Thanks a million for this amazing tool!! I can’t wait to tell everyone I meet with a shedding pet!”

“Just wanted to say THANKS!!!! I love your product!!!! At first I really didn’t think that it would work, but the groomer at the vet clinic I work at uses it and showed me what it does, so I decided to go ahead and buy one. I recommend it TO EVERYONE I KNOW!!!!”

How the FURminator deShedding Tool Was Invented

At the heart of the FURminator Professional deShedding™ Product line is the revolutionary FURminator deShedding Tool. The story of how it was developed offers important insight to how and why the FURminator deShedding Tool works better than any brush, comb or rake.

For years, a struggling groomer had been attempting to find the best tool to combat the number one complaint of her customers . . . shedding. After more than a decade of using every possible device in the industry, she worked with her husband and eventually created a unique edge that didn’t cut the pet’s coat, but grabs and removes the loose hair from the undercoat.

Together they experimented with placing the stainless steel deShedding edge in a crude handle. Little by little they experimented with different, more-ergonomic handle designs and more-effective edges. After many modifications they arrived at their most successful design and had it patented.

One thing they discovered in the process was that the grooming tool not only removed hair from loose undercoat, it also brought their pet’s own natural oils up from the bottom coat to the top coat, leaving the pet with a more lustrous, naturally shiny coat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size deShedding tool do I need for my pet?
The smaller tool is more versatile while the larger tools are more efficient. All of the tools have the same tooth design on the stainless steel deShedding edge, with the only difference being the width of the edge itself. Most cat and small dog owners choose the small tool for their pet. owners of large shedding beasts, wanting to remove the most undercoat and loose hair per stroke, will choose either the medium or large yellow tool.
On which dog breeds should the FURminator deShedding Tool be used?
The tool will work on all shedding dogs. A few breeds that are typically not good candidates for the FURminator Treatment are Poodles, Shitzus, Maltese, Bichons, Portuguese Water Dogs, and Irish Water Spaniels.
How often should I use the FURminator deShedding Tool?
Undercoat grows back after about 4-6 weeks. All pets are different, but on an average size dog, if you use the tool for about 10-15 minutes once a week, you can reduce shedding up to 90%.
Does the FURminator deShedding Tool cut the hair?
No, the deShedding Tool does not cut hair; it gently pulls out the fluffy undercoat, leaving the topcoat shiny and undamaged. Most pets enjoy the use of the deShedding tool on them much better than brushes and combs that can scratch the skin and cause pain.
Does the deShedding Tool prevent hairballs in my cat?
Yes. In fact, in the April 2005 issue of Tufts University School of Veterinary medicine’s newsletter for cat owners, the FURminator deShedding Tool was ranked among the best for getting rid of excess hair that causes hairballs.
Do I ever need to sharpen or replace the tool deShedding edge?
Neither sharpening or replacement should be required under normal use. In fact, the small blue tool edge is injection molded into the tool handle and is non-removable. The medium and large tools do offer the option to replace the edge if damaged, but this should not be necessary under normal use.
Can the FURminator deShedding Tool be used in the winter or colder months?
A: Since the FURminator deShedding Tool only removes the coat that has already shed from your dog, the tool is fine to use in the winter. You will most likely not have to use the tool as often as you would during heavy shedding months.
Can the FURminator deShedding Tool be used to remove mats or tangles?
A: The FURminator Tool is not to be used to remove mats or tangles. The pet’s coat should be completely free of any mats or tangles before using the tool. We always recommend reading the tool instructions before each use.

FURminator for Pet Shedding ProblemsFeeling a bit overwhelmed by pet shedding? Is your couch gaining a fur coat due to your pet shedding its hair? Pet shedding is a normal, natural process. Dealing with your pet shedding his fur is a problem every pet owner must face.

So, if you are plagued with pet shedding problems, here are some tips for you. The New FURminator deShedding Tools are now available for dogs and cats. We offer the FURminator, a deShedding treatment that has your pet shedding 60-80% less in between groomings. Whether for Dogs or Cats, original size, medium, or large, the FURminator deShedding tool is the most effective, easiest to use product to eliminate  pet shedding you can find. The FURminator deShedding tool reduces pet shedding by up to 90% when used weekly. The FURminator deShedding tools are designed to quickly remove the pet hair. I have no more cat hair problems! Plus, it works so well at de-shedding, that my Labrador is once more an inside dog. This tool works great on all shedding breeds of dogs and cats, (both long and short-haired). The FURminator works well for most dogs including Golden Retrievers, Terriers, German Shepherds, and Schnauzers. However, it may not be the right grooming tool for certain dog breeds including those that have curly hair or lack an undercoat all together, including Poodles, Shih-tzus, Maltese, Bichons and Portuguese Water Spaniels. The FURminator is unsuitable for non-shedding breeds or pets with acknowledged skin ailments/conditions.

Dog grooming is hard work that requires adequate professional training and a dedication to dogs; it also helps if you genuinely like dogs. But the FURminator makes dog grooming a breeze. There are certain breeds of cats and dogs that shed a lot throughout the whole year, and brushing and combing their hair is essential especially in the case of allergy sufferers. It’s important you teach your cat or dog to get groomed regularly, especially so in the case of certain breeds. In fact long hair is much easier to remove than the short bristly type hair from breeds like Doberman Pinschers, German Shorthairs, etc.

You know the chances of your pet shedding hair is very likely, but some pets shed more than others. Even short haired breeds manage to cover us and our homes with the stuff. Some breeds seem to shed all the time. Although there are no dog breeds that are totally non-shedding, the following dog breeds shed very little: Affenpinscher, Airedale Terrier, American Hairless Terrier, Australian Terrier, Basenji, Bedlington Terrier, Belgian Shepherd Laekenois, Bergamasco, Bichon Frise, Bichon/Yorkie, Bolognese, Border Terrier, Bouvier des Flanders, Brussels Griffon, Cairn Terrier, Cesky Terrier, Chacy Ranior, Chi-Poo, Chinese Crested (hairless), Cockapoo, Coton De Tulear, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Doodleman Pinscher, Giant Schnauzer, Glen of Imaal Terrier, Hairless Khala, Havanese, Irish Terrier, Irish Water Spaniel, Italian Greyhound, Kerry Blue Terrier, Komondor, Labradoodle, Lagotto Romagnolo, Lakeland Terrier, Lowchen (Little Lion Dog), Maltese, Malti-Poo, Manchester Terrier, Mi-Ki, Miniature Poodle, Miniature Schnauzer, Norfolk Terrier, Norwich Terrier, Peruvian Inca Orchid, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen, Polish Owczarek Nizinny, Poos, Portuguese Water Dog, Puli, Schnoodle, Scottish Terrier (Scottie), Sealyham Terrier, Shepadoodle, Shichon, Shih-Tzu, Silky Terrier, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Spanish Water Dog, Standard Poodle, Standard Schnauzer, Tibetan Terrier, Toy Poodle, Welsh Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Wirehaired Fox Terrier, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, Xoloitzcuintle, and Yorkshire Terrier.

And what about cats? The following cat breeds shed very little: Sphynx, Cornish Rex, and Devon Rex. But it might be difficult finding an inexpensive purebred cat.
